Squad restructuring at Rot-Weiß Erfurt

RWE gears up: This new addition heats up the title race

FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt is pushing ahead with its squad restructuring – and is visibly focusing on more stability against the ball. Before the start of the new season, the area directly in front of the defense is coming into focus: Here, ball wins, tackling strength, and better residual defense are supposed to prevent conceding goals like last season.

The center of the debate is Berk Inaler. The 26-year-old is reportedly coming from SV Sandhausen in the Regionalliga scene – however, an official confirmation of the transfer by Rot-Weiß Erfurt was still pending. The "Bild" reported an agreement and a contract until 2028. Without a club statement, this remains an important but not yet fully verified step in sports politics.

What is certain: Rot-Weiß Erfurt wants to improve defensively after conceding 47 goals last season. And the squad is being built so that coach Fabian Gerber – son of sporting director Franz Gerber – has more options and, above all, more competition in the central areas.

Why Inaler is important for Erfurt's plan

The 47 goals conceded last season are the clearest indication of where RWE needs to act. If Erfurt wants to stay at the top in the promotion race in the long term, it is not enough to decide games only in phases with possession or offensive moments. In the Regionalliga, a close title race is regularly decided in the moments when a team is disorganized after losing the ball, loses second balls, or fails to close the center.

This is exactly where a classic "number six" like Inaler would be a fitting puzzle piece: He could secure the spaces in front of the central defense, disrupt opposing counterattacks early, and maintain balance as the first passing option in the build-up. This would not be a cosmetic transfer, but a personnel decision that immediately affects the team's structure – provided the transfer goes through as reported and Inaler takes on a key role.

At the same time, sporting director Franz Gerber recently tempered expectations – a signal that fits a transfer phase in which names quickly spark euphoria, but the sporting impact only becomes visible over weeks. Because even a stable "number six" does not solve defensive problems alone: coordination, running paths, and clear roles in the chain must also fit.

Four "number sixes" for few spots

If Inaler actually comes, Fabian Gerber would have the fourth "number six" in the squad.

In addition to him, the following compete in defensive midfield:

  • Captain Til Linus Schwarz
  • Benny Boboy
  • Benjika Caciel

In a system where this role is, according to internal alignment, filled at most twice, the pressure on the existing options increases noticeably.

For RWE, this is a deliberate squad logic: More competition in the center means that the position is no longer "played through" due to a lack of alternatives, but performance and profile decide.

At the same time, tactical flexibility opens up. Boboy and Caciel could – depending on the opponent and game plan – also move to full-back positions as defensive forces.

Schwarz has also already helped out in central defense.

This very versatility is valuable in a long season: It allows the team to react to suspensions, fluctuations in form, or game developments without losing the entire structure.

The decisive point remains: The competition is likely to focus mainly on the position(s) next to a possible fixed point in the number six role. Whoever plays there must not only win tackles, but also close passing lanes, maintain distances cleanly, and manage the rhythm change between pressing and covering.

Njike Nana also stands for the defensive rebuild

Regardless of the still open Inaler question, the defensive rebuild at RWE is evidenced by an officially confirmed personnel decision: Jean-Philippe Njike Nana is moving from VfL Bochum II to Steigerwald. Rot-Weiß Erfurt has announced the signing of the 20-year-old; he signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2028, and is set to wear the number 37 in the future. It is also documented that Njike Nana has already played for the German U17, U18, and U19 national teams.

This results in a clear line in squad planning: RWE is increasing its options in defensively oriented roles – both with a talent capable of development (Njike Nana) and through the possible signing of a central stability player (Inaler). This changes hierarchies and sharpens internal standards: Whoever wants to play must not just "somehow function," but clearly fill a role.

Before the start of the season, the direction is clear: more stability, more competition, more personnel solutions for the defensive core zones. Whether Inaler – if the transfer goes through as reported – immediately forms the central axis or first has to play his way into the team will be shown on the pitch. The sporting effect is already noticeable: Rot-Weiß Erfurt is building the squad so that defensive lapses are no longer without alternatives.
