60 Bells, Two Generations and a Musical Zoo in Erfurt
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, the Erfurt Anger will be transformed into an extraordinary concert venue: Jan and Tuur Verheyen from Pelt in Belgium will make the carillon in the Bartholomew Tower ring. The free concert will begin at 16:00 and last about an hour.
When the Anger Becomes a Concert Stage
The sounds of the Erfurt carillon float over the square, connecting historic architecture with a lively concert atmosphere. 60 bronze bells create a soundscape ranging from crystal-clear highs to deep, physically palpable resonances. The audience follows the stage performance outdoors around the Bartholomew Tower.
A Musical Zoo Full of Surprises
Jan and Tuur Verheyen will guide through a program that combines classical music, cinema, pop culture, and familiar melodies. Among others, works by Camille Saint-Saëns and Antonio Vivaldi, as well as The Lion Sleeps Tonight, The Aristocats, The Eye of the Tiger, Pirates of the Caribbean and other arrangements for carillon will be heard.
The musical flow depicts various animals: cats, turtles, elephants, kangaroos, birds, and insects. This creates a concert format with humorous moments, colorful orchestrations, and immediate audience engagement.
Carillon Art Between Tradition and Present
Jan Verheyen is the carillonneur from Hasselt and Neerpelt and develops innovative projects for bell music with Bells Lab. His work ranges from concert programs to theater and dance to educational formats. He studied at the Mechelen Carillon School and completed a master's degree at the Luca School of Arts in Leuven.
Tuur Verheyen began making music at an early age and later received lessons on the carillon from his father. At the Erfurt concert, both will perform together, demonstrating how experience, youthful enthusiasm, and precise synchronization on the carillon combine.
Live Experience Around the Bartholomew Tower
Additional seating will be available around the tower. Those who cannot see the playing cabin directly can follow the event via a screen in the window of the Peterknecht bookstore. This way, the connection between hand movements, conducting, and bell sounds is also accessible outside the tower.
Conclusion: A Concert That Hovers Over the City
The carillon concert with Jan and Tuur Verheyen offers an unusual concert experience for music fans, families, and everyone who wants to experience Erfurt from a new acoustic perspective. Admission is free. Anyone wishing to feel the special live atmosphere among the bells, autumn air, and historic facades should save the date of October 31, 2026.
